What is a Pacemaker or Defibrillator check?
If you have had a Pacemaker or Defibrillator implanted, it will need to be examined at regular intervals. Checks are usually carried out every 6 to 12 months. You may need to see your doctor more frequently if you begin to experience any symptoms or if your doctor advises. The doctor needs to check to ensure the unit is functioning correctly and the battery is still charged. Batteries on the devices usually last for years but a check to ensure they are operating correctly is important.
How does it work?
It is a simple and non-invasive procedure. Your doctor can access the device via an external computerised device. The device is called a PRM, it communicates with the device and the readings are taken by your doctor. The information needed is stored in the device and can be easy and painless to extract. Once your doctor has all the data stored in your device, they will be able to analyse it and see if there are any changes or adjustments needed.

Make an appointment first. This test will be carried out in our clinic.
What do I need to do before my appointment?
There is not a great deal you need to do before your appointment. Wear comfortable clothing. Do not smoke or drink alcohol or caffeine before the appointment. Make sure you discuss what medications have been taken with your doctor prior to coming to the appointment.
